Alternative Rep’s Time Running Out

Facing likely extinction after 13 years, the Alternative Repertory Theatre in Santa Ana will close its current production, “Psychopathia Sexualis,” Sunday rather than complete its scheduled run through June 24.
This weekend’s three performances of John Patrick Shanley’s light sex comedy figure to be the last in ART history, barring an unforeseen infusion of money and managers into the operation. The theater’s entire board of directors resigned last week; its founding producer and artistic director had previously resigned.
On the bright side, says producer Gary Christensen, who is serving through the end of June, the show, which has fared poorly at the box office, already has sold out its last performance Sunday.
Many of the 72 tickets were bought by a longtime subscriber who is including the show in his retirement festivities, Christensen said Tuesday. “I wanted to make sure we stayed open through this Sunday because I didn’t want to screw up his party,” the producer said. Tickets are available for performances Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. (714) 836-7929.
