Ant-Attack Death Leads to Sanction

State regulators in Tampa have banned admissions to a nursing home where an 87-year-old woman died last month after being bitten more than 1,600 times by ants. The Agency for Health Care Administration said nurses at the Quality Health Care Center in North Port failed to treat the ant attack on Mary L. Morales Gay seriously, according to documents filed Friday. Nursing home administrator Ralph Ham said the state’s report is not true. After finding Gay covered with ants, staff members brushed them off and gave Gay a shower. She died the next afternoon.
