Resident Doris Shields nearly sang with surprise when the Women’s Club of Laguna Beach recently designated her as Woman of the Year 2000.
The retired singing teacher said she didn’t know the organization was considering her for the sixth annual award.
“I very much appreciate that anything I’ve had fun doing in Laguna would be worthy of special mention,” Shields said.
The Woman of the Year award is presented to a Laguna Beach resident who best exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism.
Shields, who is in her 80s, has donated time to myriad community service organizations, most of which are art-related. The Buffalo, N.Y., native came to Laguna Beach in 1936.
