A Boost for Residential Recycling
Residents will have more cans to haul to the curb each week, beginning in August.
The new refuse and recycling program, created through an agreement between the city and Consolidated Disposal Service, is designed to help the city meet its state-mandated recycling goal. California law requires that cities reduce the waste they send to landfills by 50% this year.
City Manager Bob Dominguez said the city has more than met its requirements, but that the new program will make it easier for residents to recycle.
During the last week of July, Consolidated Disposal will deliver two new containers to residents, similar in shape to the tan trash containers, which residents will continue to use.
Blue containers will replace the current recycling tubs and will be used for recyclable items such as paper, glass and aluminum products. Green containers will be used for yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves and shrub trimmings. The new containers can be placed at the curb alongside the regular trash container and will be picked up by Consolidated Disposal on a weekly basis.
Residents can choose the size of the bins they need and the additional cost will vary, depending on the size of the bins chosen. City officials said whichever size is chosen, fees will increase only a few cents per month. Residents will also have the option of replacing bins with different-sized ones in the future, as needed.
Consolidated Disposal will be sending a detailed brochure out to residents in the coming weeks to explain the new program. Information: (562) 663-3400.
