Masking a Problem

I agree with Dr. Peter Dure-Smith regarding the spread of germs aloft (“A Problem in the Air,” Letters, April 16). I would like to see the airlines address this problem. However, we can’t just wait for the airlines. We need to help ourselves.
Because we were flying to Europe shortly after I had suffered with bronchitis and pneumonia, my husband went down to the drugstore and purchased a mask to wear aloft. What a difference! I was able to sleep on the plane because my nasal passages did not dry out, and I was well throughout the trip. Now I always wear a mask while flying and recommend that my clients (I’m a travel agent) do the same.
On flights I also drink lots of water, try to get up and stretch often and use my own small down pillow in a washable pillowcase. I also hydrate my skin frequently with a mildly saline spray. Since instituting this program, I have managed to stay well while traveling. Before doing this, I invariably suffered from a cold at some point in my trip or on my return.
