An Adventure on the Big Blue Bus

I love the Big Blue Bus (“Driving the Big Blue Bus,” by Joel Grossman, So SoCal, April 30) and am grateful that we have such an efficient transportation system on the Westside. My son and I had an adventure on the bus this past week while my car was in for inspection.

On the #1 line, the extremely kind driver greeted us with hellos and a wonderful smile. She assisted some tourists with maps and information. Then she really demonstrated what the Big Blue Bus is all about: The poor tourists were trying to go to the Getty Center but, contrary to our driver’s directions, they were getting on a southbound bus. Our driver took immediate action, communicating through the radio system to the southbound driver that his last two passengers were on the wrong bus.

Most people probably would not have worried about passengers no longer on their bus. But our driver was committed to her passengers and her job. The Big Blue Bus is a model for transportation systems everywhere and this one driver’s behavior served as a shining example for both my son and me.

Even as a longtime rail proponent and inveterate bus hater, I cannot help but admire Big Blue Bus director John Catoe’s rider-oriented philosophy and directorship. Would that all public transit officials shared his mind-set.
