Facing increasing operational costs, students at San Clemente High School will be asked to pay this fall to participate in the school’s bands and orchestra, said Andy Magana, the school’s instrumental music teacher.
Orchestra, jazz band, concert band and wind ensemble membership will each cost $50 per student annually. Marching band members, who are already charged a fee, will pay $300, double the current cost.
Capistrano Unified allocates $1,500 a year to San Clemente High School’s instrumental program. But those funds don’t cover basic needs such as equipment repair, sheet music purchases, uniform replacement and storage space, Magana said.
The program’s typical budget is $40,000-$45,000.
