New-Look Indians Get a Split

From Associated Press

Brady Anderson hit a home run on the first pitch from Cleveland Indian newcomer Steve Woodard and the Baltimore Orioles went on to win, 4-0, Saturday night for a doubleheader split at Baltimore.

In the opener, Manny Ramirez had six runs batted in and two homers, including a grand slam, and Jason Bere won in his Cleveland debut as the retooled Indians coasted to a 14-3 victory.

Bere (1-0), acquired along with Woodard on Friday in a seven-player trade that sent Richie Sexson to the Milwaukee Brewers, gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked none. He was 6-7 with a 4.93 earned-run average in 20 starts for the Brewers.

Jolbert Cabrera had a career-high five hits and Omar Vizquel had a season-high four hits and two RBIs for Cleveland, which made three trades and added five players on Friday.

Minnesota 6, New York 2--Chad Moeller hit a tiebreaking three-run inside-the-park home run, his first major league homer, as the Twins rallied for six runs in the eighth inning at Minneapolis.

Reliever Mike Stanton began the eighth with a 2-0 lead, but gave up a single to Matt Lawton and David Ortiz’s ground-rule double. Ramiro Mendoza (7-4), activated Friday from the 15-day disabled list, then walked the bases loaded.

Jacque Jones tied the score with a two-run single before Moeller’s sinking liner into left field got past a diving Ryan Thompson and rolled all the way to the wall.

Roger Clemens, 5-0 in July, did not give up a hit for 4 2/3 innings.

Seattle 6, Toronto 5--Edgar Martinez singled home Rickey Henderson from third base in the 13th inning, giving the Mariners a victory in the longest game in the one-year history of Seattle’s Safeco Field.

Blue Jay Manager Jim Fregosi thought the key play came in the 13th when David Bell bunted with Henderson on first and catcher Alberto Castillo threw to second without getting Henderson. He didn’t know why Castillo tried to throw out the speedy Henderson.

“He thought the guy on first was 42 years old, or 43,” Fregosi said.

Toronto left fielder Shannon Stewart left the game in the third inning after he was hit in the left eye by the ball after losing John Olerud’s fly ball in the sun.

Detroit 10, Texas 2--Hideo Nomo won for the first time since July 8 and Deivi Cruz keyed a six-run first inning at Arlington, Texas, with a two-run double as the Tigers ended the Rangers’ four-game winning streak.

Nomo (4-10), who had lost his previous three starts, gave up two runs and seven hits in eight innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Former Ranger Juan Gonzalez went three for four for the Tigers, giving him 1,500 hits.

Oakland 12, Boston 1--Rookie Adam Piatt’s three-run homer in the third inning and a seven-run fifth did in the Red Sox as Kevin Appier gave up only four hits in seven innings at Oakland.

Piatt also had a run-scoring single in the first.

Tampa Bay 2, Kansas City 1--John Flaherty broke up a pitchers’ duel between the Devil Rays’ Albie Lopez and the Royals’ Mac Suzuki at Kansas City, Mo., by homering in the seventh inning, his first homer since June 9 and his first RBI since June 18.
