* Abbott Laboratories said its president and chief operating officer, Robert Parkinson Jr., will retire Jan. 31. The duties of Parkinson, 49, will be divided among three executives as Abbott focuses on its three businesses: drugs, medical products and nutritional goods such as Similac infant formula.

* Science and nature products retailer World of Science Inc. said it ended plans to be acquired by rival Natural Wonders Inc. because the two companies could not reach a final agreement on terms.

* Commuter airline Allegiant Air said it will begin flying between Long Beach and South Lake Tahoe, which hasn’t had regular flight service since November.
