Ralph V. Romero; Grocer and Club Manager

Ralph V. Romero, a retired grocer and club manager, died at his home in Ventura after a battle with cancer. He was 90.

Romero was born in 1909, in Guanajuato, Mexico, and moved to Oxnard when he was a young child.

In 1940, he opened a small neighborhood grocery store named Romero’s Market in the Tortilla Flats area of Ventura. Later, he co-managed the Green Mill Hall in Ventura, where musical entertainment such as Lawrence Welk, Fats Domino and Maria Victoria was featured. He also managed the El Patio Clubhouse in Oxnard, and owned Rajo’s and Fiesta Drive-in.

Romero was a member of the Latin American Club, Knights of Columbus and also served as an Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Ventura.

When he was younger, he enjoyed bowling and playing golf.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Madelyne; son Robert; daughters Kathleen Garcia of Oxnard, Elaine Garcia of Oxnard, and Barbara Ward of Reno; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura, which is handling the arrangements. The Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the same location.

A Mass is scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, with Father Larry Dowdel officiating. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Romero’s name may be made to the Assisted Home Hospice, 468 Pennsfield Place No. 100, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360.
