Airstrikes Flush Rebels, Russia Says

Associated Press

Airstrikes have flushed small bands of Chechnya’s rebels from the mountains into the flatlands held by Russian troops, the military command said Sunday.

More than 1,500 rebel fighters are reported to be in areas north of the mountains, a military spokesman said. Russian jets and helicopter gunships attacked key rebel refuges and supply routes in the southern mountains of the breakaway republic.

Many of the rebels had been killed, the spokesman said.
