A 4-year-old boy was airlifted to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center on Sunday afternoon after his father and 13-year-old brother found him unconscious at the bottom of a community pool in Coto de Caza.
About 200 people were in the area of the Olympic-size pool at the Coto Valley Community Club when the father, Steven Vertun, and brother found the boy, Alexander, in the deep end about 4 p.m., said Capt. Paul Hunter of the Orange County Fire Authority.
“I’m praying and praying and hoping everything will be OK,” said Dorothy Vertun, 80, the father’s great-aunt.
The aunt, who lives in Laguna Woods, called Alexander an “active, sweet little boy.”
No lifeguard was stationed at the pool, Hunter said.
An off-duty Los Angeles County firefighter administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.
An Orange County sheriff’s helicopter flew the boy to the hospital, where he regained a pulse but was unconscious, Hunter said.
Hospital officials declined to release the boy’s condition.
