Pipes Fall From Big Rig at Port, Killing Driver

LONG BEACH — A truck driver was killed instantly when a 1,000-pound bundle of pipes slipped off his rig and struck him during delivery to a ship at the Port of Long Beach, authorities said.
The man died when one of about a half-dozen bundles of pipes fell about 10 feet and struck his head, said Long Beach Fire Battalion Chief Rick Pillsbury.
The accident occurred at Stevedoring Services of America, Pier F, Berth 207, about 2 p.m., Pillsbury said.
The independent driver was not identified.
