Fluor Wins Contract From German Refiner
Fluor Corp. said Wednesday it has won a contract from Germany’s largest oil refiner, Ruhr Oel GmbH, to upgrade a refinery in Germany’s Ruhr industrial region for the production of ultra-clean motor fuels.
The deal opens an important door for Fluor, an Aliso Viejo engineering and construction concern, because the clean-fuel business is expected to boom in Europe as the European Union phases in air-quality rules like California’s. Officials said Ruhr Oel’s Gelsenkirchen facility will meet 2005 standards for low-sulphur fuel when it becomes operational in the third quarter of 2001.
The companies didn’t disclose the value of the contract. But industry observers estimated it will be worth about $70 million for Fluor, whose Fluor Daniel unit is teaming up on the project with the European construction firms Strabag AG, Ponticelli Freres and Fabricom Contracting.
