LOS ANGELES — David Pierpont Gardner, president emeritus of the University of California and the University of Utah, has been elected chairman of the Board of Trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
Gardner succeeds Robert F. Erburu, who was named chairman emeritus after completing his third four-year term on the board and seven years as chairman on June 30.
Meanwhile, two new members were elected to the board of trustees: Barbara Fleischman and Luis Nogales. Fleischman and her late husband, Lawrence, donated part of their private collection of ancient Greek and Roman art to the Getty Museum--one of the largest gifts of antiquities to any American art institutions in recent years, said Getty spokeswoman Lori Starr.
Nogales is a former president of Univision and ex-chairman of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
Gardner, who recently retired after six years as president of the Menlo Park-based William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, has served as a Getty trustee since 1992.
