Burns Wins a Late Battle With Weston
Todd Burns ended James Weston’s bid for his eighth win in nine races on the final lap as two got tangled on the front stretch--allowing Burns to take the lead and win the second of the 40-lap NASCAR late model races before 5,210 at Irwindale Speedway Saturday night.
After Weston, of Goleta, took the lead from Burns, of Riverside, on lap 24, it looked as if he would secure his second win of the night--having won the first of the 40-lap races. But a caution was thrown on lap 38 when Deryk Ward spun out, giving Burns one last shot at victory.
After the restart on lap 39, Burns dove low in turn 3 to take the lead and held on to it as the two went into the front stretch. Burns and Weston came together as they crossed the stripe and nearly knocked each other out of the race. But Burns recovered better than Weston and took the lead for good going to turn 1.
