Clemens’ Action Speaks Louder Than Words

I have been reading the comments regarding John Rocker and Met fans. Yes, Rocker is ignorant and the fans’ insults uncalled for. However, neither Rocker nor the Met fans did anything comparable to what Roger Clemens did this past Saturday night.
Pitching inside is one thing, but throwing at Mike Piazza’s head, possibly ending his career, is inexcusable. Clemens has a history of hitting batters he cannot retire (Piazza was previously seven for 12 with one grand slam against Clemens).
I do not have an issue with pitchers pitching inside to brush batters away from the plate. That is National League ball. But to throw at the head is mean, cheap and just plain dangerous.
Again, there is a need to abolish the DH. It may save a few lives.

In his excellent story on David Wells [July 11], Ross Newhan made a glaring error that it would be remiss not to correct. Roger Clemens did not help pitch the Yankees to the 1999 World Championship. An over-the-hill, washed-up Clemens simply rode the coattails of the best team in baseball to get a ring, because he knew it was the only way he could get one.
