An undercover operation by officers of the state Department of Fish and Game has stung a charter boat from Newport Landing Sport Fishing, resulting in citations for four passengers, a deckhand and the boat’s skipper.
The boat had been fishing for sand bass Monday during a day trip, said Fish and Game spokesman Steve Martarano. A pair of department officers, acting on an anonymous tip about over-limit fishing, went along for the ride. After the boat returned to port, four agents handed out citations to four passengers for unlicensed fishing and fishing over limits, a deckhand for improper fileting technique and the skipper for allowing unlicensed passengers to fish.
The charges carry a potential fines of up to $1,000 and six months in jail, Martarano said.
