Honmo Has the Right Combination to Win

Fast fists and the footwork to match made Nobuto Honmo too much for Memo Moreno to handle Tuesday night at Sagebrush Cantina.

Honmo, a super-featherweight from Japan, displayed skill from top to bottom while recording an eight-round unanimous decision during a main event before about 500.

Honmo, 15-4-1 with three knockouts, won nearly every round against Moreno, 5-4-2, a resident of Beaumont who spent much of the fight trying to connect on combinations that Honmo easily slipped.

Honmo connected regularly with his own combinations before dancing from Moreno’s range.

In the seventh, the bout was halted briefly because of a gash near Moreno’s right eye. By the time the fight was over, Moreno’s white and gold shorts were stained with blood.

Three judges scored the fight in favor of Honmo, 79-73, 78-74 and 77-75.

The undercard featured a competitive five-round super-featherweight bout between Ulises Pena of Pacoima and Marcos Arauz of Palmdale. Using a decisive reach advantage, Pena (3-0) won a unanimous decision in a close fight. Arauz fell to 2-2.

In a four-round junior-middleweight fight, Rigoberto Plascencia of Bakersfield won a unanimous decision over Raul Fuentes of San Jacinto.

Kevin Gilchrest of Pasadena and Harold Lowe of Palmdale engaged in a five-round light-heavyweight bout short on punches. Gilchrest won a unanimous decision despite not doing any damage. Both fighters entered with 1-1 records.

A scheduled four-round welterweight bout between Ruben Navarro of Port Hueneme and Jorge Sievers of Colton was declared a technical draw after an inadvertent head butt in the first round left Sievers with a gash above his left eye.
