The Ocean Institute of Dana Point has submitted plans to the city for an expansion that would quadruple the marine education facility’s current size.
The institute in Dana Point Harbor currently has an 8,300-square-foot facility. The proposal would expand it to 34,000 square feet.
The institute, which first opened in 1981, is a popular destination for local school classes, hosting 78,000 students per year. The expansion would allow it to serve 135,000 students.
The expansion, currently under review by the Planning Commission, would cost an estimated $17 million. The state has provided a $1.5-million grant. The rest would be raised through a fund-raising campaign.
