The city will buy an El Camino Real Bell for $1,000 as part of a project commemorating California’s 150th birthday on Sept. 9.
The Laguna Niguel Woman’s Club, a 31-year-old local women’s volunteer group, in conjunction with the California Federation of Women’s Clubs, made the request to the City Council last week. Throughout the state, 205 bells have been purchased to celebrate California’s sesquicentennial.
The historical markers will be placed in areas where roads used by missionaries to travel throughout California once existed.
Woman’s club members are discussing possible locations for the bell. It will be installed six weeks after the decision has been made, said Elaine Gennawey, president.
