Health Care Director to Discuss Programs

County health care chief Pierre Durand will speak to the local chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill on Tuesday.
Durand will discuss the status of programs and housing for the mentally ill and the impact of this year’s budget cuts on county mental health programs.
The Health Care Agency director has been at the center of the county’s debate over how much additional funding is needed for mental health programs. The county’s Behavioral Health Department, part of the agency, must shave its budget by $1.6 million in the coming year.
Durand and mental health deputy David Gudeman had hoped to expand programs. But with county supervisors determined to end a years-long trend of overspending, that effort appears stalled.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the Mental Health Training Room, 300 Hillmont St., in Ventura. A family support group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome.
