KEMPTEN, Germany — A gondola carrying hikers to the top of the 7,218-foot Nebelhorn peak crashed into a guide rail Thursday, injuring 16 people, some seriously, police said.
Several of the injured were taken to hospitals by helicopter, and 500 other climbers were being evacuated from the top of the mountain.
The accident was the first for the gondola company in its 70 years of operation, said Augustin Kroells, a member of the board of operators. The accident was at the second of three stations along the 4-mile gondola line.
It was not immediately clear if the accident was caused by mechanical failure or human error.
