Man, 19, Drowns in Lake Despite Lifeguards’ Efforts

A 19-year-old Palms man drowned in Castaic Lake Wednesday afternoon despite the efforts of lifeguards to save him, authorities said.

Other swimmers saw the man go down in about 6 feet of water and alerted lifeguards, who pulled him out and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, said Lt. Paul Gallo of the Los Angeles County police, which patrols county parks.

The victim was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities declined to release his name Wednesday night because they had not yet notified his family.

Castaic Lake has been the site of at least three drownings since 1997.

Two years ago, a 3-year-old boy drowned after wandering away from a family picnic, and in 1998, a young man died while trying to retrieve a life jacket floating offshore.
