TWA Awarded LAX-Washington Route

Trans World Airlines Inc. beat out UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and other carriers to win the right for new nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport and Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport. The carrier said it will begin its daily service Sept. 10. The route was one of several new flight slots at the Washington airport that were awarded by the Transportation Department to carriers with little or no current service at Reagan National. The routes are part of a rule President Clinton signed into law in April to clear the way for more flights out of busy airports in Washington, New York and Chicago. The law required the agency to grant 24 exemptions, or 12 round trips, from Reagan National. TWA called the award a “great win” and said it will benefit “air travel consumers in both Washington and Southern California.”
