Pricey Lodgings

Regarding extra fees imposed on travelers (“Here a Fee, There a Tax--Extras Empty the Wallet,” Travel Insider, June 18), I have a question or maybe a gripe: What in the world is going on with hotel rates? They are outrageous.

Especially in the big cities, it’s getting harder and harder to travel. I teach, so I don’t have a big travel budget. Where do people get the money to pay $149 (usually the minimum) up to $250 or more a night to stay in a halfway decent hotel? Even the not-so-nice ones are close to $100.

I am going to Chicago in August. I am fortunate that I can stay with my sister there. But some college friends are going to meet there for a reunion. They are teachers too. They would like to stay downtown where there are many things to do, but it’s been impossible to find something affordable.

Thank you for writing about the extra fees. I just spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone and the Internet searching for the best deal on a rental car for August. I got the rate of $172 for seven days, but with all the taxes and extra fees, it comes to $207. Ridiculous.
