MAPUTO, Mozambique — Rebels ambushed a convoy of vehicles on the country’s main north-south road and killed 211 civilians, the national AIM news agency reported Friday.
The rebels destroyed about 80 vehicles in the attack Thursday near the town of Taninga, about 50 miles north of the capital of Maputo, AIM said.
“There are many bodies scattered in the bush,” the unidentified source told AIM.
Civilians sometimes travel in convoys to guard against attacks from the rebels of the Mozambique National Resistance, who have been fighting a 10-year war against the Marxist regime.
Damaged vehicles stretched along 2 1/2 miles of the road, and several were still smoldering a day after the attack, AIM reported.
There was no immediate comment from the rebels on the government charge.
