Surrealist Masson Dies at 91

PARIS — Painter and graphic artist Andre Masson--considered, along with Salvador Dali, one of the last great exponents of surrealism--died early today at his Paris home, his son said. He was 91.

One of the principal surrealists, Masson referred to himself as a “painter by instinct.” He was known for developing “automatic writing”--spontaneous linear expressions of his personal mythology. After World War II, he painted landscapes in Aix-en-Provence.
