SEOUL, South Korea — Police fired tear gas today to break up a protest by hundreds of screaming demonstrators who disrupted a campaign appearance by the governing party’s presidential candidate, Roh Tae Woo, for the second straight day.
About 500 militant students and dissidents yelling “Down with the military dictatorship!” appeared before a scheduled campaign rally for Roh at a railway station in Iri. About 5,000 people at the rally ran for cover as police fired tear gas. Roh canceled the appearance and returned to Seoul.
