Notebook : Carson Unleashe Linemen, QB Pays Price

Quarterback Jeremy Leach led Granada Hills to two wins over Carson in summer passing leagues, but it was a considerably different outcome last Friday as Carson romped to a 42-14 non-league victory at Granada Hills.

The Colts sacked Leach nine times, something they were unable to do during summer leagues where rushing the passer is not allowed.

“We knew we had to put pressure on the quarterback to make it a game,” said Carson linebacker Arnold Ale, who led the team with 11 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. “We read where (Leach) was saying how clean he was after every game.”

Ale, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior, has 10 sacks in four games and is closing in on the school single-season record of 21 set by Anthony Caldwell in 1978. The Colts are averaging seven sacks a game.

Said Leach after his brutal treatment by the Carson defense: “They just came from everywhere. We were ready for it. They just came too hard.”

James Moses, Serra High’s high-scoring forward, is among several dozen players from around the nation--and the only one from the South Bay--to receive high school preseason All-American high honorable mention in Street and Smith’s Basketball Yearbook.

Southern California is well represented, with three players listed in the top 20, but the only other South Bay players named are Westchester junior forward Zan Mason and Inglewood guard Bobby Sears. Both received honorable mention. Moses and Sears are seniors.

Southland players singled out as of Top 20 caliber are Fairfax forward Chris Mills, named to the second five; Simi Valley center Don McLean, third team, and Crenshaw forward John Staggers, fourth team.

St. Anthony guard Darrick Martin, who battled Moses for the Camino Real League scoring title last season, received high honorable mention.

In girls preseason ratings, Shaunda Greene of Morningside is the only South Bay player to receive honorable mention. Two Southern Californians received All-America listing: Trice Jackson of Lynwood was named to the second team, and Tasha Bradley of Muir was named to the third team.

The Foot Locker Partners Race and 8-K Open will be held Saturday at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey. At least 1,000 runners are expected for the partners race (husband-wife, father-son, sister-brother, etc.) while another 500 are expected in the open. The top five husband-wife teams will split $7,500 in prize money, and another $5,000 will be awarded to runners in the open.

The partners race is expected to include Irish Olympian Monica Joyce, who now lives in Hermosa Beach and is married to USC track Coach Fred LePlante. Another South Bay partners entry are Thomas and Lesley Calise of Carson. Lesley is director of community relations for the Los Angeles Marathon.

Around the horn: Carson High got three school record performances in its opening 28-0 victory over Lynwood. George Malauulu’s 94-yard TD pass to Brian Treggs tied one record, lineman Arnold Ale’s four quarterback sacks tied another and kicker Louis Perez’s 20th consecutive point-after is a new record. The Colts have set another mark by winning three straight shutouts . . . Saddleback College football Coach Ken Swearingen, who first made his mark at El Camino, last week racked up his 100th victory at Saddleback and is within three victories of 200 on the community college level . . . Former Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Department employee Ed Stewart, who played major league baseball from 1950-54, has been named one of 10 inaugural members of the UCLA Baseball Hall of Fame. Stewart, who played at UCLA from 1935-37, was the first Bruin to make the majors. He joins such luminaries as Jackie Robinson, Dr. Bobby Brown, president of the American League, and Chris Chambliss as inductees. Induction ceremonies will be held Jan. 24. Stewart, who is retired in Inglewood, continues to direct athletic programs for Hawthorne.
