Murray Is Given Spink Award, Will Be Inducted as Writer Into Cooperstown

ST. LOUIS — Jim Murray, syndicated columnist of The Times, was voted the J.G. Taylor Spink Award by the Baseball Writers Assn. of America here Tuesday.
Murray will be inducted into the writers’ wing of the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y., next July. He previously had been voted national sportswriter of the year 14 times by members of the National Assn. of Sportscasters and Sportswriters.
Vern Plagenhoef of the Booth Newspapers was elected president of the BBWAA and Phil Pepe of the New York Daily News was named vice president. Jack Lang of the New York Daily News was re-elected secretary-treasurer, and Red Foley, also of the New York Daily News, was reappointed assistant secretary-treasurer.
