Local News in Brief : Freight Train Kills Youth

A 14-year-old boy was struck by a Southern Pacific freight train and killed as he walked along the tracks in El Monte with a companion, authorities said Tuesday.
Alfred Barrajas, 14, of South El Monte, was struck by the freight train on tracks east of Durfee Avenue and Valley Boulevard at 9:40 a.m. Monday, sheriff’s Sgt. Gary DeCew said. The train’s crew saw the boys on the tracks, sounded the horn several times and turned on the engine’s headlights and yellow warning lights, he said.
