A rare bust of Edgar Allan Poe has been stolen from the Poe Museum in Richmond, Va. “This is a major crime in the art world,” said Bruce English, president of the Poe Foundation, which operates the museum. “I’m very disturbed. I have it insured for $2,000 but it’s worth more than that.” The 75-pound bust, slightly larger than life size, was taken from the museum sometime between 10:40 a.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, police said. English said the plaster bust is thought to have been completed in 1909 to serve as a model for a bronze version made by sculptor Edmond Quinn and now housed in Fordham Cottage at Fordham University in New York, where Poe lived several months in the 1840s.
