CAGLIARI, Sardinia — Police surprised a group of bandits on the Italian island of Sardinia on Monday and freed a 26-year-old woman kidnaped four months ago, officials said.
Cristina Berardi, the daughter of the president of an industrialists’ association, was apparently being moved from one hideout to another when a police patrol spotted the gang and opened fire. The bandits fled, leaving Berardi behind. Police said she was in good physical condition despite the ordeal.
