SYDNEY, Australia — Police Monday arrested more than 100 demonstrators who attempted to enter the joint Australia-U.S. defense base at Pine Gap in central Australia.
The protesters were among 1,000 people who gathered Sunday at the top-secret facility near Alice Springs to protest the expected renewal of the Pine Gap lease, which expired Monday.
Established in 1966 under a non-negotiable lease agreement with the United States, Pine Gap is a scientific base and intelligence-gathering satellite ground station.
