“The Phantom of the Opera.” by Gaston Leroux. Read by Anton Rodgers. Listen for Pleasure. Two cassettes, abridged. Leroux’s preposterously florid melodrama about of the ghost of the Paris Opera and the imperiled soprano he loves has been given new currency by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical in London. Actor Rodgers gives it an appropriately florid reading, all heavy accents and heavy breathing, and all inducing more not-quite-intentional laughter than intended chills.
