AT&T; Earnings Down, MCI Up

American Telephone & Telegraph Co.’s earnings fell 5% and MCI Communications Corp.’s earnings rose 22% in the latest fiscal quarter, the long-distance companies said today.
AT&T; said its earnings slid to $505 million, or 47 cents per share, in the three months ending Sept. 30, from $533 million, or 48 cents per common share, in the third quarter of 1986. MCI, the second-biggest long-distance phone company, said its third-quarter earnings jumped to $22 million, or 8 cents per share, from $18 million, or 6 cents per share, for the same 1986 period.
