Factory Use Steady at 81.2%

WASHINGTON — The operating rate at America’s factories, mines and utilities remained unchanged in September at 81.2% of capacity, the highest level in three years, the government said today.
The Federal Reserve said that the operating rate showed no movement from the revised August level but was 2.4 percentage points higher than a year ago. So far this year, American manufacturers have enjoyed a significant upturn in activity as the weaker dollar has made U.S. goods competitive once more on overseas markets.
