Orange County College Roundup : UCI Men Win Collegiate Title in Cross-Country Invitational

The UC Irvine men’s cross-country team won the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational collegiate title Saturday, finishing with 123 points. The Anteaters finished second overall behind the Reebok Track Club, which won with 44 points. UCI’s women’s team finished second overall with 84 points, 10 points behind first-place UCLA.
UCI’s Richard Graves finished the five-mile course in 24 minutes 2 seconds, second overall and first in the collegiate division. UCI senior Gus Quinonez finished fifth in 24:14.
UCI’s Buffy Rabbitt finished second in the women’s competition, completing the 5,000-meter course in 16:45, and Jill Harrington was ninth in 17:03.
In college water polo:
UC Irvine 10, Fresno State 6--The Anteaters, ranked fourth in the nation, remained undefeated in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., coming from behind late in the second quarter to defeat the Bulldogs with seven unanswered goals. UCI is 9-4, 4-0. Fresno State is 9-10, 1-2.
Senior Greg Wilson paced UCI with three goals. Julian Harvey and Mike Doting each scored two, and goalie Chris Cuplanty had 11 saves.
In men’s soccer:
Chapman 3, Cal State Bakersfield 0--Scott McGuire scored twice to lead Chapman (7-4-2, 2-1-1) to the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at Orange.
Rick Snyder also scored for Chapman. Chapman goalkeeper Mark Dudzinski made two saves to record his fourth shutout.
Southern California 1, California Baptist 0--In Golden State Athletic Conference play, Toby Ray scored the game’s only goal and goalie Tim Ramage had five saves. SCC is 5-7-2, 2-0-1.
In women’s volleyball:
San Jose State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Titan sophomore Susan Herman had 22 kills to set a school single-season record of 307 in a 15-10, 15-4, 15-11 loss. The Titans are 9-14, 1-10.
UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--Freshman Kim Collins led UCI with 13 kills, but the Anteaters dropped to 7-8, 2-6 in the PCAA with a 15-11, 15-12, 15-12 loss. UCSB is 14-10, 4-2.
UC Riverside 3, Chapman 1--Melanie Hones led Riverside with 14 kills in a 4-15, 15-10, 15-2, 15-13 win. Dana Beardsley had 10 kills for Chapman in the CCAA match. Chapman is 9-10, 3-1; Riverside is 5-11, 3-1.
