Marco Perez kicked a 37-yard field goal with 3 minutes 20 seconds to play to give Santiago High School a 9-7 victory over La Quinta in a Garden Grove League football game Saturday night at Jason Field.
Senior linebacker Ruben Hurtado gave Santiago (3-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 in league play) a chance late in the fourth quarter when he blocked an Aztec punt, giving Santiago a first down at the La Quinta 42-yard line. After a 10-yard pass from Dana Ripley to Mike Mercado and a personal-foul penalty, Santiago’s drive stalled and Perez came in for the game-winning field goal.
Ripley’s 17-yard scoring pass play to Paul Gregerson in the first quarter gave Santiago the early lead. Perez missed the conversion, however, making the score 6-0.
La Quinta (0-6, 0-3), took the lead in the second quarter when Vince Fussillo recovered a fumble by Ripley in the end zone. Brian Giuliano’s conversion kick made it 7-6.
Santiago was led by Rudy Motley, who rushed for 71 yards in 19 carries.
