What Professionals?

I have trouble figuring out how the project manager of the Chinese Agricultural Manpower Center, working out of a cramped three-room office in mid-Manhattan, can thoroughly understand rural farm labor conditions in California and other states mentioned in the Oct. 3 article, “Plan to Import Chinese Farm Workers Scored.” Aside from the great expense involved and the possible exploitation and anti-Asian tensions, the man is apparently unfamiliar with the history of farm labor conditions in California.
His statement regarding bringing the “best labor to U.S. farmers” and his description of this personnel as “bona fide professional farm workers” sounds like pure sales hype. Were he planning to send us brain surgeons, I can understand that we would need “professionals.” But farm workers can be trained quickly to do their jobs.
