Converted tailback Tom Walker rushed for 201 yards and scored 2 touchdowns Friday to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 27-7 victory over Estancia in the Sea View League opener for both teams at LeBard Stadium.
Walker switched from fullback to tailback two weeks ago when starting tailback Scott Morency was injured. Walker gained 113 yards in the second half as the Sailors scored 20 points to break a 7-7 halftime tie.
Newport Harbor (5-1, 1-0) drove 73 yards in 12 plays to start the second half, with quarterback Chris Hall scoring on a one-yard run. Hall replaced starting quarterback Kirk Summers, who threw only three passes and was intercepted once in the first half.
The lead increased to 21-7 when Jason Johnson caught Estancia wide receiver Mark Hartley’s fumble in midair and ran 34 yards for the touchdown.
Walker rushed for 56 of his team’s 59 yards on its final touchdown drive, scoring on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Estancia (2-4, 0-1), which failed to cross the 50-yard line in the second half, was led by quarterback Todd Brooks, who completed 9 of 19 passes for 113 yards.
