3.0 Aftershock Wakes Residents in Quake Area

An aftershock to the devastating Oct. 1 earthquake rumbled through southeast Los Angeles County early today, shaking a few residents awake but causing no substantive damage, officials said.
The quake, measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale of earth movement, struck at 1:11 a.m. in an area two miles northwest of Montebello and seven miles southeast of Pasadena, Caltech spokeswoman Amy Branch said. The latest in a series of more than 300 aftershocks, the quake was centered two miles southeast of the epicenter of the 6.1-magnitude Oct. 1 temblor.
“It’s just moved a little further down the fault,” Branch said.
The Oct. 1 quake and its aftershocks--the largest hit Oct. 4 and was measured at 5.5--have caused more than $213 million in property damage.
Red Cross officials said today that 568 people remain in emergency shelters, down from the peak of 2,443 immediately after the first quake. Officials from the Red Cross and local police agencies said they had received no reports of additional damage following today’s aftershock.
