Owner Paul Mellon Decides Injured Java Gold Will Race Again Next Year

NEW YORK — Java Gold, who injured his right front hoof while running second in last Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup, will race again as a 4-year-old, trainer Mack Miller said Wednesday.
The 3-year-old colt won 6 of 8 starts this year. Included were three straight Grade I stakes victories--in the Whitney, the Travers and the Marlboro Cup.
“There has been a lot of conjecture, but nobody knew for certain until yesterday,” Miller said of owner Paul Mellon’s decision. Miller spent two days at Mellon’s Rokeby Stables in Virginia.
Plans call for Java Gold, a leading contender for 3-year-old and Horse of the Year honors, to be rested until January.
