Bomb Explodes at U.S. Consulate in Spain; 8 Hurt

BARCELONA, Spain — A bomb exploded today outside the door of the fourth-floor U.S. Consulate here, slightly injuring eight people and causing extensive damage, U.S. officials said.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Bob Meade said in Madrid that all of the injured were Spanish nationals.
Meade said the blast knocked out the telephone switchboard at the consulate in downtown Barcelona.
Two Spanish consular employees were among the injured, Meade said. The others were believed to be passers-by. All eight injured were treated for cuts and bruises and released, officials said.
Meade said a parcel placed outside the fourth-floor elevator exploded about 1 p.m., blowing off the main door to the consulate and causing serious damage to the stairwell and hall area.
Spanish police sources said the bomb could have been planted by pro-Arab groups.
