The World : Israel Again Wins U.N. Test

For the sixth straight year, the General Assembly blocked a bid by Arab states to reject Israel’s U.N. credentials. All of the Arab states except Egypt sponsored the move not to recognize the credentials of the Israeli delegation on grounds that Israel has repeatedly ignored U.N. resolutions concerning the Middle East and the Palestinians. The 80-39 vote, with 10 abstentions, came on a motion by Finland that the assembly take no action on the Arab proposal. If successful, the initiative could have resulted in the ouster of the Israelis from the assembly and all its committees. The United States has warned on several occasions that if Israel is ousted from the world body, it would also leave.
