Landon’s Body to Lie in State Before Services

TOPEKA, Kan. — The body of former Kansas governor and presidential candidate Alf M. Landon will lie in state in the Capitol rotunda today before a private family graveside service Thursday morning, an aide to his daughter, U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, said.
The private graveside service is scheduled at Mount Hope Cemetery in southwest Topeka. Landon, a revered figure in American political life since his 1936 defeat by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, died Monday at his Topeka home with his wife at his side.
“The (public) tribute to Dad was his 100th birthday,” Kassebaum said, referring to a celebration last month that featured a visit by President Reagan.
Contributions may be made to the Kansas State Historical Society for a special fund to create a Landon memorial.
