Local News in Brief : Railroad Fined $8,500

Southern Pacific Transportation Co. pleaded no contest Tuesday to five misdemeanor charges of illegally blocking intersections in Southeast Los Angeles and was fined $8,500.
In exchange for the plea, entered one day before the company was to stand trial in Whittier Municipal Court, prosecutors agreed to drop one count and not file charges for two other incidents under investigation.
The longest stoppage was 48 minutes in April in Pico Rivera, when emergency vehicles were blocked by a Southern Pacific train and sheriff’s deputies reported seeing children climbing between the cars on their way school.
