Parachute Fails, General Killed

BRASILIA — Brazilian Army Chief of Staff Gen. Fernando Valente Pamplona was killed at a parachute tournament when his canopy failed to open on a 12,000-foot jump, the army reported today.
The 64-year-old general, a parachuting enthusiast, was attending an international parachute competition Sunday in southern Brazil as a special guest.
