650 Indian Immigrants Protest Death, Injury in 2 N.J. Beatings

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Hundreds of Indian immigrants marched Sunday to protest recent attacks that have left one man dead and another severely injured, violence they say is racially motivated.
About 650 Indian men and women, many wearing traditional dress, marched with their children down John F. Kennedy Boulevard as they commemorated the 118th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader who espoused passive resistance to oppression.
Mayor Anthony R. Cucci said police patrols in the Jersey City Heights section--the center of the Indian community--had been stepped up since Dr. Kasuahal Saran, 28, was found severely beaten and lying in a street Oct. 1.
In an earlier assault last month in nearby Hoboken, 30-year-old Navroze Mody of Jersey City died three days after being beaten by a group of youths. Four boys, ages 15 to 17, were charged with murder in Mody’s death, police said.
Shouting over a bullhorn in Hindi, Hardyal Singh, president of the International Mahatma Gandhi Assn., told the crowd that the 15,000 Indian residents of this community of 230,000 had been model citizens.
